\"HAHA_April_LAtascosa_0006_100dpi-409x396\"Add colorful resident subtropical and temperate species with the amazing neo-tropical migration that\u00a0move through here and you can end up with perhaps the best birding in all of North America in spring\u00a0and fall. The rest of the year ain’t too shabby either with each season bringing in a new cast.<\/p>\n

RAPTORS<\/strong>, Texas style…<\/p>\n

The Lone Star State has more raptor
\nspecies than any other including a tiny
\nbut resurgent Aplomado Falcon >>
\npopulation concentrated in the Boca
\nChica and Laguna Atascosa region<\/p>\n

Another gorgeous raptor
\nwhich is specialty in Texas
\nand southern Arizona
\nprimarily is a Parabuteo:
\nHarris’s Hawk<\/p>\n

This long legged, long tailed
\nhawk is known to
\ncooperatively hunt small
\nmammals and birds in small
\nfamilial groups<\/p>\n

streaked and mottled<\/p>\n

A much more common falcon that
\ngraces the south and central Texas
\nskies and quite a character is the
\nCrested Caracara.<\/p>\n

They can change the color of their
\nfacial skin from yellow to pink to
\norange in seconds<\/p>\n

Caracaras are often found in groups\u00a0(they primarily feed on carrion) and\u00a0then may exhibit rather bizarre\u00a0territorial dances and postures as in\u00a0some of the photos below<\/p>\n

White-tailed Hawks are primarily birds of Mexico but they also do quite well in the Rio Grande\u00a0Valley and along the Texas Gulf Coast<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
